Recipe for Cheese Straws Another Quick and Easy
By Just_Rodney
Cheese Straws -Tangy Tasty Cheesey Nibbles
You know the favourite type of advertising phrase that is used over time when there where only radio commercials to the current television and now even internet adverts, I know it has been used to death, I might add, in practically every advert that promotes food snacks and so on.
However I am going to use it myself for this my avourite easy to make snack.
"Just One Bite And You Know Your Hooked"
Now I am going to put my money where my mouth is.
Ingredients
100g of Flour
1ml of Salt
1ml of Cayenne Pepper more or less to your taste
1ml of Mustard Powder - for that extra flavour as it enhances the flavour of the cheese
50g of soft Butter
50g of finely grated Cheddar Cheese - use the second smallest hole on your grater.
1 Egg Yolk, beaten.
Cold water
Tip for the not so experienced bakers/cooks
Before charging around and getting the whole working surface all clutter and clusted.
Weigh and prepare all the ingredients in small bowls or larger ones as needed.
Then put all the measuring spoons, scale and other bits and pieces that you have needed.
An Important Step
This is a very important step, and applies to even qualified chef, cooks and novices alike.
Read through your recipe first, see what and in which order things going to be used. Also sometimes the ingredients only tell you the raw materials. There are other things that are required and these also need to be gathered and placed ready for use when the recipe calls for them.
So read though the method.
Method
- Sift the Flour, Salt, Cayenne pepper, and mustard in a medium sized mixing bowl.
- Then add the butter in pieces to the flour.
- Rub the butter and flour with your finger tips until the mixture resembles fine breadcrumbs.
- Stir in the finely grated cheese into the mixture.
- Add the beaten egg yolk to the mixture
- Rub the mixture with your finger tips until it forms a smooth dough, Use a bit of cold water a very little at a time if the mixture is too dry.
- Place the dough into the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes.
- Preheat the oven too 200º Celsius
- Thinly roll the dough out on a floured board,
- Cut into strips of about 5 inches long and a 1/4 inch wide.
- Place on a baking sheet
- Bake for 10 to 15 minutes
- When golden brown remove the baking sheet
- Let the stand for a few minutes to cool
- Transfer to a drying rack to cool down to room temperature
- Store in an airtight container
All the extras that you need
So having read the instructions you now know what other things are needed to make the Straws or whatever you are going to make, this is always a crucial step as sometimes in more complicated recipes the timing and executions is critical to the success.
So you need
- a mixing bowl,
- a sieve,
- a beater, here you can do it with a fork,
- a floured board
- a rolling pin
- a sharp knife
- a ruler
- a baking tray
- a cooling rack
Know you have every thing
Go through it step by step and as you are prepared it will come out like a treat.

Princessa, I learned that by accident at the night a learned Moroccan, it worked but the flavours balance was altered and not quite so fiery as it should have been.
The correct order of slipping the spices is crucial.

My mouth is watering. I think it is important your remainder of reading through the whole recipe first before starting. Sometimes I just start without finishing reading the whole thing... needless to say I end up with some culinary disasters :-(
Hope everything is well with you. Take care.
